Biodegradable straws

The challenge: Develop straws made from renewable materials that can be produced using the same process and manufacturing tools as conventional plastics, while being functional, recyclable and having a low carbon footprint.

Which BIQ material is used: PE106

RESULTS: An equivalent straw made from fossil plastic has 88% higher CO2 footprint compared to using PE106.

From 2022, single-use plastic items will be banned in the EU, and new laws and regulations are being introduced on an ongoing basis to reduce littering in oceans, lakes and other marine areas, and to reduce CO2 emissions and harmful microplastics in the environment.

Green Trust, established in 2022, produces and sells environmentally friendly consumables to the catering industry.

With PE106, Green Trust can offer straws with equivalent functionality and user experience as fossil-based plastic straws. In addition, the straws are recyclable and degradable and have become a popular product with a growing customer base
